I’ve written on stepping out of your comfort zone, doing jobs or skills building that expand your tool kit, how to find a better job fit and then how to play to your strengths. All of these ideals focus on roundabout ways of making you better and more effective at life. Today let’s take a more direct path towards that goal.
I would admit that no other tool I have used has been as effective at making my days better and keeping my emotions in check as the daily practice of Mindfulness. Mindfulness comes in many forms, but essentially, it’s the intention of connecting with yourself in ways you probably are not doing now.
I journal daily, practice mindful eating regularly and practice Qigong often, all of which leads me to happier and more productive days helping people with their technology or my management issues. Most importantly, I meditate daily. I love the practice and find it to be incredibly effective at allowing me to operate at a higher level for the people that need me.
The American Psychological Association in this 2012 research paper found the following benefits:

- Boosts to Memory
- Better Focus
- Less Emotional Reactivity
- More Cognitive Flexibility
- Better Relationship Satisfaction
- Better Empathy
- More Compassion
- Better Counseling Skills
I’m having a hard time perceiving why any manager I know would not want to improve on some of these elements in their lives and management style, I for one am trying to be better at all of them. Arguably, some of these benefits seem to be more deficient in the technology world.
If you’re not sure how to start a meditation practice look up local places that can get you started. If your more of a self-starter, download the Headspace app and try it out for free before you purchase it (I still use it often for guided meditation days). Qigong is practiced across the country and it’s not that hard to find an instructor (this site may help).
